MTA Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee Survey

Greetings MTA member,

Founded 1979, true to its mission statement, the MTA Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee (EMAC) is particularly concerned about increasing the level of participation by members who are African-American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian or Pacific Islanders. These groups are typically under-represented both in education and in the leadership ranks of our association.

We know that there is a disparity between the percentage of minority teachers in the Commonwealth as compared to the percentage of minority students. Here's a look at the numbers:

- Eight percent of students are African-American, but only 2.6 percent of teachers are African-American.
- The gap is even larger for Hispanics, where 15 percent of our students are Hispanic but less than 3 percent are teachers.
- 5.5 percent of our students are Asian but only one percent of teachers are Asian.

The percentage of minority participation in the ranks of MTA leadership is even more dismal. We’d like to change that, but we need your help. The following questions will help our committee to develop programs that will speak to the needs of minority educators in such a way that it will be obvious that involvement in the association is a value added proposition for all of our members, minority and non-minority.

Thank you for your time.

In solidarity,

Christine Boseman
